Perhaps the Detroit Tigers are finally going to get going and make a lot of experts seem smart again. After being picked by many to win the World Series, the Tigers were atrocious at the beginning of the season. But they’ve now won nine of their least eleven games. And one of the players leading the way is Marcus Thames.

It’s funny but right around the time when Jim Leyland anounced that Marcus Thames would become an everyday player in left field the Tigers started playing better ball. You might say it’s just a coincidence but if you look closer you’ll see that it’s more than that.

Thames hit big homeruns – in distance and in timing. And last night he solidified a Tigers lead in the top of the ninth to help ensure their 5-1 win over the San Francisco Giants. What makes it remarkable is that now out of his last eight hits, all of them have been homers. That’s right. Thames last eight hits have all gone yard. And now Thames will try to continue that streak when the Tigers play the Giants Wednesday afternoon at 3:55 est.

Meanwhile, what once looked like baseball’s best team now looks like it might be the worst team to lead their division. The Arizona Diamondbacks have been terrible over the last month and a half. Sure they still lead the NL West by 4.5 games but that’s only because the rest of the division is horrendous. The D-Backs are just three games over .500 and right now they’re getting beat-up by the AL Central – not exactly the best division in baseball to this point.

Right now the D-Backs are playing the Oakland A’s, one of the hotter teams in baseball. In fact the A’s are trying to gain ground on the Angels in the AL West. Right now the A’s have won 4 straight and they are just 3 games in back of the Angels. The Angels will take on the Mets again tonight. The Angels beat the Mets and their new manager on Tuesday night.
